Over the past few years, a vacant village plot has been transformed into a thriving hub. The new Punnetts Town Village Hall hosts regular clubs, classes and coffee mornings, while the attached doctor’s surgery cares for the community’s needs.
Mike Snatt, Honorary Secretary of the Punnetts Town Village Hall, explains how strong community spirit pushed through ambitious building plans.
“Punnetts Town, near Heathfield in East Sussex, lacked a hall until about ten years ago, when a few local enthusiasts decided to plan a new building on a site adjacent to the Recreation Ground. They were determined to create a fine hall which would be a credit to the village, and set about intensive fund-raising, engaging architects, negotiating the lease of the site from the Parish Council, and applying for a grant from the National Lottery.
“The Lottery application was successful, but did not cover the entire cost of the project. Since it carried a deadline for completion, the race was on to cover the shortfall before time ran out. The commercial banks would not lend to a body that had no credit history, but the Charity Bank came to the rescue just in time.
“The result is a magnificent Village Hall. Income from lettings has proved so robust that the Management Committee decided to make regular additional payments against the mortgage loan.”
